犯罪を恐れて、変装する日本人

Fearing Crime, Japanese Wear the Hiding Place
( New York Times )

On a narrow Tokyo street, near a beef bowl restaurant and a pachinko parlor, Aya Tsukioka demonstrated new clothing designs that she hopes will ease Japan’s growing fears of crime.

Deftly, Ms. Tsukioka, a 29-year-old experimental fashion designer, lifted a flap on her skirt to reveal a large sheet of cloth printed inbright red with a soft drink logo partly visible. By holding the sheetopen and stepping to the side of the road, she showed how a woman walking alone could elude pursuers ― by disguising herself as a vending machine.

Ms. Itoh is one of them. Ms. Itoh, a homemaker in the central city of Nagoya, did not want her full name used because her husband still doesnot know. After cleaning the dinner dishes, she would spend her evenings buying and selling British pounds and Australian dollars.

中華航空機炎上、燃料パイプの損傷が原因か

Fuel line damage suspected in jet fire
China Air blast probe doesn't see design flaw
( Japan Times )

The fire and explosion that destroyed a China Airlines jetliner at Naha airport Monday was probably caused by fuel leaking from a line damaged during landing, the transport ministry said Tuesday.

Boeing Co., the American manufacturer of the wrecked 737-800, has informed airlines worldwide that the fire that consumed the plane was not the result of a manufacturing error. Boeing and the U.S. government have dispatched experts to help with the joint investigation by Japanese and Taiwanese authorities.
