The alleged gunman in Friday's shooting rampage at a sports club in Sasebo, Nagasaki Prefecture, was found dead at a nearby church Saturday after apparently committing suicide, police said.

Two people were killed and six others were injured by the gunman, who came in the front entrance of Sports Club Renaissance Sasebo at around 7:10 p.m. and started firing what was believed to be a shotgun. The man targeted both people in the gym and in a pool where children were taking lessons. He also fired shots in the lobby and an office.

【 英語ってどんな海？ 】

今回は、佐世保の事件からです。

まず alleged は、正確を期すために、英語の報道記事で多用される単語です。「（まだ証明はされていないが）〜だと主張されている」「〜であると疑われる」という意味です。名詞の allegation もよく出てきます。

gunmanallegationと聞くと、西部劇の銃の早撃ちを連想してしまいます。もちろん、そういう意味で用いられる場合もありますが、基本的には、銃で武装した人間、銃犯罪者を指します。

こうした形はとても英語的です。意味の担い手として、動詞より形容詞、形容詞より名詞を好む英語の特徴がよく現れています。

I'm a light sleeper.
（私は軽い眠り手だ→私は眠りが浅い）

My wife is an excellent manager.
（私の妻は優れた管理者だ→家計のやりくりが上手だ）

恐ろしいかな、最近よく目にする shooting rampage ですが、shooting は「銃などを撃つこと」、rampageは「暴れ回る（こと）」ですから、「銃乱射」

でも、You disagree? Okay. Shoot! と言えば、「異論がある？よし、撃ってみろ！」ではなくて、「話してみろ！」です。英語文化には「議論は戦争だ」という発想があるから、こういう言い方が成り立つのでしょう。逆に言えば、日本にはそういう発想がないので、直訳すると意味が通じなくなるのです。

commit suicide は「自殺する」。commit a crime なら「罪を犯す」。日本語でも「かかわり合うこと」という意味で「コミットする」と言いますが、この意味での用法も大切です。これは名詞での文ですが、

She doubts her boyfriend's commitment to her.

なんて言ったら、かなり深刻な事態です。「彼女は恋人の真意を疑っている」といった感じ。commitment とは「責任をもつこと、約束すること、献身すること」で、promiseよりも重い言葉なのです。

ちなみに、boyfriend や girlfriend はただの「男の友達」「女の友達」ではなく、ズバリ「恋人」のことです。ですので、「アタシ、ボーイフレンドがたくさんいるの！」なんて英米人の前で言ったら、とてもエッチな人だと思われてしまうのでご用心。

第２段落の文章には、まず結論や大事なことを述べて、次にその経過や理由を説明するという英語の作法がよく出ています。・・・, who 以下で事件の経過が詳しく書かれています。

金曜日に長崎県佐世保のスポーツクラブで起きた銃乱射事件の容疑者が土曜日、近くの教会で死亡しているのを発見された。自殺したとみられる。警察は述べた。

２人が死亡し６人が負傷したこの事件で、容疑者は午後７時１０分頃、スポーツクラブ「ルネッサンス佐世保」に正面玄関から入り、散弾銃と思われるものを撃ち始めた。男はジムや、子供たちがレッスンを受けていたプールで２人を標的にした。ロビーや事務室でも発砲した。
