The Special Sting of Personal Terrorism

This was not terror − not as Indians understood it. This was war.

The killers stormed the streets of Mumbai, India’s financial capital, with machine guns and bags of grenades. They did not strike with the terrorist’s fleeting anonymity. Their work was fastidiously deliberate. It went into a second day, then a third. They took time to ask your nationality and vocation. Then they spared you, or herded you elsewhere, or shot you in the back of your skull.

As a surprise attack became a 48-hour struggle, the burden of
responding transferred from the police to soldiers. The language was of war: television anchors spoke of buildings “sanitized” and “flushed out,” of “final assaults” and “collateral damage.” Helicopters hovered over Mumbai, and commandos dropped onto roofs. The grainy television imagery suggested not so much a terrorist attack as the shapeless, omnidirectional chaos of Iraq.

【 英語ってどんな海？ 】

というわけで、これを取り上げないわけにはいきません。今回はムンバイのテロ事件を。

まず、見出しが目を引きます。stingは「（針などで）刺す（こと）、その傷」ですが、「おとり捜査」なんて場合もあります。

見出しの訳は困ったのですが、このテロの特徴として、personal terrorismと言っているわけです。爆弾をドカンではなくて、機関銃なんかで直接的に攻撃した。本文中には、こんな文章もあります。

They seemed to prolong the fight as long as they could. They killed face to face; they wanted to see and speak to their victims; they could taste the violence they made.

彼らはできる限り戦いを引き延ばした。顔を合わせたまま被害者を殺した。被害者の姿を目にし、声を耳にすることを欲した。そうすれば、自分たちが振るった暴力を味わえる。

tasteという言葉が、恐ろしいですね。

第1段落の not as・・・はThis was not terror as・・・が省略された形です。

第2段落、with the terrorist’s fleeting anonymityという部分は簡潔で英語的な表現です。fleetは「（月日などが）速く過ぎる」ですので、fleetingは「つかの間の、一瞬の」。anonymityは「匿名」ですから、これまでの自爆テロのような形態を指しているのでしょう。

ここでは-lyが付いた副詞ですが、fastidiousは「好みのうるさい、気難しい、細心の注意を払った」で、deliberateは「熟考した、慎重な、入念な、故意の」。両方とも試験などによく出る単語だと思います。

spare key（スペアキー）やspare tire（スペアタイヤ）でおなじみのspareですが、この単語はちょっと厄介です。ここでは「助命する、容赦する」ですが、「惜しむ、控える、使わない、（時間などを）割く、分け与える」などなど、日本人には難しい使い方をします。英英辞典などで語の全体的なイメージを掴むといいと思います。それにしても、この文章、youですからね。臨場感たっぷりと言いますか。

ちなみに、spare tireには「お腹回りの余分な肉」なんて意味もあります。何となく分かりますでしょ？

shot you in the back of your skullというのも英語的な表現です。英語は重要な情報を早く伝えようとしますから、最初にshot you（あなたを撃った）が来て、その後でin the back of your skull（あなたの頭蓋骨の後ろにおいて）と場所を特定するわけです。でも、

The minister kissed Queen Elizabeth on the hand.

と喋るのは、×だと聞いたことがあります。途中まで聞いた相手が「エリザベス女王にキスしちゃったの？」とびっくりしてしまうのだとか。ですから、

The minister kissed Queen Elizabeth's hand.

が、○なのだとか。真偽のほどはネイティブの方に聞いてみてください＾＾；

第3段落のtelevision anchors spoke of以下の部分も自信ありません＾＾；　sanitizeはsanitate（消毒する、衛生設備を施す）と同じなのでしょうが、転じて「好ましくないものを除去する」という場合にも使われますから、「テロリストが建物から除去された」という意味かもしれません。

flushed outは「放水して（何かが）流し出された」ということ。具体的に何を言っているのか分かりません。軍事用語か何かで、あるのかなあ。ちなみに、トイレでジャ〜って水を流すのもflushです。

assaultは「（肉体的、または言葉による）攻撃」で、法律用語ですが、
assault and batteryという言い回しも覚えておくといいかと。

collateralは「副次的な、従属的な」ですが、「担保（物件）」でもあります。

最後の文には、学校でよく習うnot so much・・・as 〜 が出てきます。「〜ほど・・・でない、・・・というよりむしろ〜」

omnidirectionalのomni-はomnibus（オムニバス）などからも連想できるように、「全、普遍」の意の接頭辞です。

奇襲攻撃が48時間の攻防戦へと変わると、対応の責任は警察から軍へと移された。飛び交ったのは戦争の言葉だ。テレビのニュースキャスターの口から出るのは「建物の消毒洗浄」や「最終突入による付随被害」。ムンバイの上空にはヘリコプターが舞い、特殊部隊が屋根へと降下する。粒子の粗いテレビ映像が映し出していたのはただのテロ攻撃ではなく、あらゆる方向に無定形に拡散していくイラクのような混沌だった。
