【 英語ってどんな海？ 】

というわけで、このニュースは取り上げないわけにはいきません。大変な事態なだけに、臨場感のある文章です。

まず、見出しにあるbailoutは「（財政的な）救済措置」で、本文にあるeconomic rescue planのことです。bail outと句動詞としても用います。「脱出する」という意味もあります。bailには「保釈（金）」といった意味もありますので、辞書で確認しておくといいですよ。

第1段落、rank and fileは「兵卒、平社員、一般人」。列に並んだイメージから来ているのかしら・・・。

revoltは「反乱、反抗」。この部分、rejected・・・in a revolt that rocked the Capitol,はとても英語的な構文です。学校英語式に下から訳せば、「国会議事堂（Capitol）を揺るがす反乱という形で・・・を拒絶した」

英語はこういう風に書いちゃうんですね。でも、僕は上から順に「・・・を拒絶した反乱が国会議事堂を揺るがした」と読んじゃいます。そのほうが楽ですから。

それから、thatはrevoltを受ける関係代名詞で、revoltは無生物主語で、そんな人間でないものが大いにモノに働きかけちゃうのが英語です。「〜が・・・を・・・する」が基本形です。英語は「〜する」的発想の言語だと言われます。一方の日本語は「〜になる」的発想の言語だと言われます。試訳はその点を踏まえています。

plungeは「突っ込む、飛び込む、突進する」といった感じですが、株価などが「急落する」という場合によく出てきます。第3段落に出てくるplummetも類義語です。その反対に「急上昇する」場合には、soarやsurgeなどがよく使われますので、覚えておくといいですよ。marketは「（金融）市場」。「株式市場」ときちんと言う場合はstock marketなどですね。

第2段落のlower a fog of uncertaintyには、ちょっと首をひねりました。自動詞としてのlowerなら、「（空模様が）悪くなる」という意味もありますが、ここは他動詞ですので「低くする、減らす、少なくする」

ただ、「減らす、少なくする」と取ってしまうと、明らかに状況とは反対になってしまいます。ですから、これは「不確かさの霧が低くなって、私たちの足元に広がってきた」みたいなことを言っているのでしょう。lower a fogでググってみても、全然出てきませんでしたし。間違っていたら、ゴメンナサイ。

第3段落は臨場感に富んだ劇的な文章です。expireは「（有効期限が）切れる、満了する、終了する」、musterは「集める、（元気、勇気を）喚起する、（支持などを）かき集める」で、投票時間が延長されて、その間に議員たちが支持集めに奔走した様子が描かれています。

最後のdoneはfinishedの意味で、形容詞と考えていいと思います。ただ、人が主語になったりもします。

I'm done with you.

これは「私は君とは終わった」、つまり「君とは絶交だ」です。そんな悲しいこと言わないで〜！
