Experts Revive Debate Over Cellphones and Cancer

What do brain surgeons know about cellphone safety that the rest of us don’t?

Last week, three prominent neurosurgeons told the CNN interviewer
Larry King that they did not hold cellphones next to their ears.
“I think the safe practice,” said Dr. Keith Black, a surgeon at
Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, “is to use an earpiece so you keep the microwave antenna away from your brain.”

That supposed link has been largely dismissed by many experts,
including the American Cancer Society. The theory that cellphones
cause brain tumors “defies credulity,” said Dr. Eugene Flamm,
chairman of neurosurgery at Montefiore Medical Center.

But researchers who have raised concerns say that just because
science can’t explain the mechanism doesn’t mean one doesn’t exist. Concerns have focused on the heat generated by cellphones and the fact that the radio frequencies are absorbed mostly by the head and neck. In recent studies that suggest a risk, the tumors tend to occur on the same side of the head where the patient typically holds the phone.

【 英語ってどんな海？ 】

というわけで、今回はケータイ中毒になっている皆さん＾＾；には気になる話題の記事を。4段落取り上げます。「で、NY Times によりますと・・・ 」はとっても太っ腹なメルマガです＾＾；

まず基本的なことから。surgeon は「外科医」。「外科」あるいは「手術」は
surgery です。「内科医」は physician で、一般的に doctor の意味でも用いられます。

第3段落、supposed は、決定的な証拠はないけれども本当だと「仮定された、想定された」です。

さて、ユージン・フラム先生の言葉、defy credulity がちょっと難しいですね。defy は英和辞典の訳語によると、「反抗する、逆らう、無視する、拒む」。credulity は「信じやすい傾向、軽信」。訳語をそのままくっつけても、なんかピンと来ませんね。こういうときは英英辞典を調べてみましょう。すると、defy にはこんな説明が。
show no fear of nor respect for〜
（〜に対して恐れや考慮を示さない）

これで腑に落ちました。私たちのたやすく物事を信じてしまう性質を軽視しているということなのでしょう。英英辞典は役に立つなあ〜。

でも、defy credulity の部分が分からなくてもダイジョーブという読解に役立つテクニックを。こうした英文記事では、ひとつひとつの段落が意味やアイデアの単位です。ですから、同じ段落内であれば、but や although といった逆接を示す語が出てこない限り、前の文とかけ離れた文が続くということはありません。ここでは、携帯電話とガンの関連性は否定されてきたという前の文章の流れを押さえていれば、自ずと推測できるというわけです。

defy はよく出てきます。credulity は形容詞の credulous（信じやすい、だまされやすい）も覚えておきましょう。

第4段落は、just because・・・ doesn’t mean〜 に注目です。
この because は接続詞 that（・・・ということ）と同じ働きをします。意味は「・・・だからといって〜であると意味しない」。この表現もよく使われます。

さて、このメルマガを読んだ人が携帯電話をお箸で持ったり、遠くに離して受話器に叫ぶようになったりしたらエライことなので、補足しておきます。脳の耳に近いところにできる腫瘍というのはきわめてまれで、ですから、携帯のリスクは小さいそうです。でも、長期に及ぶ使用の影響や、これから一生使うことになる子供たちのことはまだ分からないとする先生もいるようで。う〜む、どうなんでしょう。やっぱり、箸で持つようにしようかしら・・・。
