Nobel Prize Is Seen as Rebuke to China
( New York Times )

Few nations today stand as more of a challenge to the democratic model of governance than China, where an 89-year-old Communist Party has managed to quash political movements while creating a roaring, quasi-market economy and enforcing a veneer of social stability.

With the United States’ economy flagging and its global influence in decline, some Chinese leaders now appear confident in asserting that
freedom of speech, multiparty elections and constitutional rights ―
what some human rights advocates call universal values ― are indigenous to the West, and that is where they should stay.

The awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize to Liu Xiaobo, 54, was a sharp
rejoinder to that philosophy. Of course, it was a Norwegian panel that gave him the prize, providing Chinese officials and their supporters with ample ammunition to denounce the move as another attempt by the West to impose its values on China.

But anticipating the criticism, the judges underscored the support in China for the imprisoned Mr. Liu’s work and his plight, which they said proved that the Chinese were as hungry as anyone for the political freedoms enjoyed in countries like the United States, India and Indonesia.

The length of a film should be directly related to the endurance of the human bladder.

The only thing we know about the future is that it will be different.

New Planet May Be Able to Nurture Organisms
( New York Times )

It might be a place that only a lichen or pond scum could love, but
astronomers said Wednesday that they had found a very distant planet
capable of harboring water on its surface, thus potentially making it a home for plant or animal life.

Nobody from Earth will be visiting anytime soon: The planet, which goes by the bumpy name of Gliese 581g, is orbiting a star about 20 light-years away in the constellation Libra.

But if the finding is confirmed by other astronomers, the planet, which has three to four times the mass of Earth, would be the most Earthlike planet yet discovered, and the first to meet the criteria for being potentially habitable.

But they expressed caution about this particular planet, noting
uncertainties about its density, composition and atmosphere, and the need for another generation of giant telescopes and spacecraft in order to find out anything more about it. Other Goldilocks planets have come and gone in recent years.

Arthur Penn, Director of ‘Bonnie and Clyde,’ Dies
( New York Times )

Arthur Penn, the stage, television and motion picture director whose
revolutionary treatment of sex and violence in the 1967 film “Bonnie and Clyde” transformed the American film industry, died on Tuesday night at his home in Manhattan, the day after he turned 88.

Mr. Penn’s direction may have also changed American history. He advised Senator John F. Kennedy during his watershed television debates with
Richard M. Nixon in 1960 (and directed the broadcast of the third
debate). Mr. Penn’s instructions to Kennedy ― to look directly into the camera and keep his responses brief and pithy ― helped give Kennedy an aura of confidence and calm that created a vivid contrast to Nixon, his more experienced but less telegenic Republican rival.

But it was as a film director that Mr. Penn left his mark on American
culture, most indelibly with “Bonnie and Clyde.”

Not only was the film sexually explicit in ways unseen in Hollywood since the imposition of the Production Code in 1934 ― when Bonnie stroked
Clyde’s gun, the symbolism was unmistakable ― it was violent in ways that had never been seen before. Audiences gasped when a comic bank
robbery climaxed with Clyde’s shooting a bank teller in the face, and were stunned when this attractive outlaw couple died in a torrent of bullets, their bodies twitching in slow motion as their clothes turned red with blood.
