Behind the Scenes: To Publish or Not?
( New York Times )

It is a scene from which many of us would naturally recoil, or at least avert our eyes: a grievously injured young man, fallen on a rough patch of earth; his open-mouthed and unseeing stare registering ― who can know what? ― horror or fear or shock; being tended desperately by two companions in what are the first moments of the final hours of his life.

It is a scene that plays out daily among American troops in
Afghanistan and Iraq, but one that has largely been unseen by the American public in eight years of war.

On Friday, after a couple of weeks of intramural debate and over the objections of the young man’s father (supported by the defense secretary), The Associated Press released such a photograph, by Julie Jacobson.

Let sleeping dogs lie.

It is better to sleep on things beforehand than lie awake about them afterward.

Mutation Tied to Need for Less Sleep Is Discovered
( New York Times )

Researchers have found a genetic mutation in two people who need far less sleep than average, a discovery that might open the door to understanding human sleep patterns and lead to treatments for insomnia and other sleep disorders.

Although the mutation has been identified in only two people, the power of the research stems from the fact that the shortened sleep effect was replicated in mouse and fruit-fly studies. As a result, the research now gives scientists a clearer sense of where to look for genetic traits linked to sleep patterns.

The scientists were searching the samples for variations in several genes thought to be related to the sleep cycle. In what amounts to finding a needle in a haystack, they spotted two DNA samples with abnormal copies of a gene called DEC2, which is known to affect circadian rhythms. They then worked back to find out who provided the samples and found a mother and daughter who were naturally short sleepers. The women routinely function on about 6 hours of sleep a night; the average person needs 8 to 8.5 hours of sleep.

A Look at Who Naps
( New York Times )

Wake up, America! Fully one in three adults admit that on any typical day they take a nap, according to a national survey released Wednesday.

The proportion of self-proclaimed nappers was even higher among
adults who had trouble sleeping the night before and who had
exercised within the past 24 hours. It was also
disproportionately higher among people who are poorer, black, men older than 50, men and women over 80 and among people who are not happy.

Mammals that divide their day between two distinct periods ― sleep and wakefulness ― are in the minority, according to the National Sleep Foundation, which pointed out on its Web site: “While naps do not necessarily make up for inadequate or poor quality nighttime sleep, a short nap of 20-30 minutes can help to improve mood, alertness and performance.”

In these times, we must return to the idea of fraternity ― as in the French slogan “liberte', e'galite', fraternite'” ― as a force for moderating the danger inherent within freedom.

The world hates change, yet it is the only thing that has brought progress.
