G20に拡大される世界経済フォーラム

Global Economic Forum to Expand Permanently
( New York Times )

President Obama will announce Friday that the once elite club of rich industrial nations known as the Group of 7 will be permanently replaced as a global forum for economic policy by the much broader Group of 20 that includes China, Brazil, India and other fast-growing developing countries, administration officials said Thursday.

The move highlights the growing economic importance of Asia and some Latin American countries, particularly since the United States and many European countries have found their banking systems crippled by an economic crisis originating in excesses in the American mortgage market.

Security Council Adopts Nuclear Arms Measure
( New York Times )

President Obama moved Thursday to tighten the noose around Iran,
North Korea and other nations that have exploited gaping loopholes in the patchwork of global nuclear regulations. He pushed through a new United Nations Security Council resolution that would, if enforced, make it more difficult to turn peaceful nuclear programs into weapons projects.

Proposals Lag Behind Promises on Climate
( New York Times )

World leaders gathered here for a global summit meeting on climate change made modest proposals on Tuesday for combating the problem, underscoring the way domestic political battles still trump what United Nations officials had hoped would be a sense of global urgency.

In speech after speech, presidents and prime ministers of countries large and small spoke with soaring promises about the importance of confronting the problem for future generations. But when it came down to the nuts-and-bolts promises of what they were prepared to do in the next decade, experts and analysts were disappointed that there were no bold new proposals, particularly from the United States.

A few leaders did make significant commitments.

Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama of Japan, who took office last week, said that his country would seek to cut greenhouse gas levels 25 percent, to 1990 levels, by 2020, and that Japan would provide significant financial and technical aid for green development.

内野安打ってセクシーですよ・・・

The first casualty when war comes is truth.

戦争が起きたとき、最初に犠牲になるのは真実である。
(ハイラム・ジョンソン)

I think there’s sexiness in infield hits because they require
technique. I’d rather impress the chicks with my technique than with my brute strength.

内野安打ってセクシーですよ。テクニックが要求されますから。僕の場合は、パワーじゃなくてテクニックで若い子たちに凄いと思わせたい。

Mariners’ Suzuki on a First-Name Basis With Records
( New York Times )

Because Suzuki’s magical season happened to coincide with a wacky marketing gimmick concocted by his manager, Akira Ohgi, his name will forever be rooted in the mystique of 200 hits in Japan. Ohgi an astute baseball man, quickly recognized the breakout potential of Suzuki. Ohgi was a flamboyant sort and he understood the name Ichiro Suzuki, as commonplace as Joe Smith is in the United States, offered little pizazz for an already colorless Blue Wave team that played in the second-fiddle Pacific League.

Hoping to capture Japan’s fancy, Ohgi replaced the surname across the back of Suzuki’s jersey with his first name during spring training and registered him with the commissioner’s office as Ichiro. Surprised, to say the least, Suzuki, who was 20, had little leverage to protest.

From that moment, scoreboards across Japan would identify him as Ichiro and the rest of Orix’s starting lineup by their surnames. Public-address announcers would shout out only the three syllables of his first name when introducing his at-bat. In a land of conformity, it was an attention-grabbing move. But for Suzuki, a young outfielder trying to make a name for himself based on performance, the pressure of having his name made for him was immense.
