北朝鮮、2度目の核実験を実施

North Korea Claims to Conduct 2nd Nuclear Test
( New York Times )

North Korea announced on Monday that it had successfully conducted its second nuclear test, defying international warnings and drastically raising the stakes in a global effort to get the recalcitrant Communist state to give up its nuclear weapons program.

The North’s official news agency, KCNA, said “The Democratic
People’s Republic of Korea successfully conducted one more
underground nuclear test on May 25 as part of the measures to bolster up its nuclear deterrent for self-defense in every way as requested by its scientists and technicians.”

Word of the test sent a shudder through Asian financial markets and clearly caught South Korea and the United States off guard. The news hit just as South Korea’s government and people were mourning the suicide of former President Roh Moo-hyun. And hours after the test was reported, South Korean state media reported that the North had fired a short-range missile.

韓国前大統領自殺、現政権批判と悔恨

Recriminations and Regrets Follow Suicide of South Korean
( New York Times )

As South Koreans laid white chrysanthemums at makeshift memorials for their former president, Roh Moo-hyun, many said Sunday that the once-popular champion of clean government had been driven to suicide by more than humiliating bribery allegations.

They directed much of their ire at the prosecutors and conservative media who relentlessly pursued the accusations of corruption against Mr. Roh and his family. Many accused the current president, Lee Myung-bak, of orchestrating the investigation, a move that could become a political liability for him.

Others expressed deeper misgivings that Mr. Roh was a victim of the legacies of South Korea’s authoritarian past -- most notably the near ritual of incumbent presidents presiding over investigations of their predecessors.

ある朝目覚めて・・・

If we were to wake up some morning and find that everyone was the same race, creed and color, we would find some other cause for prejudice by noon.

ある朝目覚めて、誰もが同じ人種、宗教、肌の色になっていたとしても、私たちは昼までには差別の種を見つけている。

万能インフルエンザワクチンを求めて

A Long Search for a Universal Flu Vaccine
( New York Times )

Two shots of measles vaccine given during childhood protect a person for life. Four shots of polio vaccine do the same. But flu shots must be taken every year. And even so, they provide less than complete protection.

The reason is that the influenza virus mutates much more rapidly than most other viruses. A person who develops immunity to one strain of the virus is not well protected from a different strain.

That is shaping up to be a major problem as the world prepares for a possible pandemic this fall from the new strain of swine flu. It is impossible to know how many people might die before a vaccine matched to that strain can be manufactured.
