With a good conscience our only sure reward, with history the final judge of our deeds, let us go forth to lead the land we love.

The optimist sees the doughnut; the pessimist sees the hole.

Borrow money from pessimist - they don't expect it back.

Greenspan Concedes Error on Regulation
( New York Times )

For years, a Congressional hearing with Alan Greenspan was a marquee event. Lawmakers doted on him as an economic sage. Markets jumped up or down depending on what he said. Politicians in both parties wanted the maestro on their side.

But on Thursday, almost three years after stepping down as chairman of the Federal Reserve, a humbled Mr. Greenspan admitted that he had put too much faith in the self-correcting power of free markets and had failed to anticipate the self-destructive power of wanton mortgage lending.

“Those of us who have looked to the self-interest of lending
institutions to protect shareholders’ equity, myself included, are in a state of shocked disbelief,” he told the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform.

Barack Obama for President
( New York Times )

Hyperbole is the currency of presidential campaigns, but this year the nation’s future truly hangs in the balance.

The United States is battered and drifting after eight years of
President Bush’s failed leadership. He is saddling his successor with two wars, a scarred global image and a government systematically stripped of its ability to protect and help its citizens − whether they are fleeing a hurricane’s floodwaters, searching for affordable health care or struggling to hold on to their homes, jobs, savings
and pensions in the midst of a financial crisis that was foretold and preventable.

As tough as the times are, the selection of a new president is easy. After nearly two years of a grueling and ugly campaign, Senator Barack Obama of Illinois has proved that he is the right choice to be the 44th president of the United States.

Ex-Pilot Tells of 1957 Order to Fire at U.F.O.
( New York Times )

An American fighter pilot flying from an English air base at the height of the cold war was ordered to open fire on a massive unidentified object that had lighted up his radar screen, according to an account published on Monday by Britain’s National Archives.

The pilot said that he had been ordered to fire a full salvo of
rockets at the U.F.O., which was moving erratically over the North Sea, but that at the last minute the object picked up great speed and disappeared from his radar. The account was not verified by military authorities.

“I had not the foggiest idea what had actually occurred, nor would anyone explain anything to me,” the pilot said. After returning to the base, he said, he was led to a man in civilian clothes, who “advised me that this would be considered highly classified and that I should not discuss it with anybody.”
