Mugabe Is Sworn In After Discredited Vote
( New York Times )
Robert Mugabe, the runaway winner in a one-horse race, was quickly inaugurated Sunday as president of Zimbabwe after a runoff election on Friday. His opponent had already dropped out because state-sponsored enforcers were beating and killing his followers.
“I, Robert Gabriel Mugabe, do swear that I will truly serve in the office of president, so help me God,” he said somberly as he stood before a white-wigged judge under a red-carpeted tent at his official residence in Harare.
So began the 84-year-old Mr. Mugabe’s sixth term as president, the victor in an election many world leaders have denounced as
illegitimate.

Sports bra saves US hiker in German Alps
( New York Times )
An American hiker stranded in the Bavarian Alps for nearly three days was rescued after using her sports bra as a signal, police in southern Germany said Monday.
Berchtesgaden police officer Lorenz Rasp said that he helped lift
24-year-old Jessica Bruinsma of Colorado state to safety by helicopter on Thursday after she attracted the attention of lumberjacks by attaching her sports bra to a cable used to move timber down the mountain.
''She's a very smart girl, and she acted very resourcefully,'' said Rasp. ''She kept her shirt and jacket for warmth, but thought the sports bra could work as a signal.''

火星の氷は溶けたのか?
Scientists ponder whether ice on Mars ever melted
( New York Times )
The apparent discovery of ice near Mars' north pole has scientists asking: Did the frozen water melt at some point in the planet's long history to create an environment friendly for life?
The Phoenix spacecraft exposed bright white crumbs at the bottom of a trench while digging near Mars' north pole earlier this week. The bits disappeared in new photos sent back on Thursday, convincing scientists that the magic act was evidence of ice that vaporized after being exposed to the sun.
Water is a prerequisite for life, but it's just one piece of the
equation. Scientists generally agree that organic carbon and an energy source like the sun are also considered necessary ingredients.

Gay Unions Shed Light on Gender in Marriage
( New York Times )
For insights into healthy marriages, social scientists are looking in an unexpected place.
A growing body of evidence shows that same-sex couples have a great deal to teach everyone else about marriage and relationships. Most studies show surprisingly few differences between committed gay couples and committed straight couples, but the differences that do emerge have shed light on the kinds of conflicts that can endanger heterosexual relationships.
The findings offer hope that some of the most vexing problems are not necessarily entrenched in deep-rooted biological differences between men and women. And that, in turn, offers hope that the problems can be solved.

北朝鮮、拉致問題でやや歩み寄る
N. Korea Yields Slightly on Abductions
( New York Times )
North Korea said Friday that it would reopen an investigation into abductions of Japanese citizens, reversing its longstanding position that the issue had been settled.
In return, Japan announced that it had agreed to lift some sanctions imposed on the North for its nuclear program, including the ban on travel between the countries, but that more serious sanctions would stay in place.
The Japanese announcement, which followed two days of bilateral talks in Beijing this week, was the first sign in years of even a slight thaw between the countries. Although both sides made very minor concessions, they offered a possible way to resolve the abductions dispute, which has long complicated the six-nation talks over the North’s nuclear weapons program and has strained the relations between the governments in Tokyo and Washington.

Clinton Ends Campaign With Clear Call to Elect Obama
( New York Times )
Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton brought her campaign for the White
House to an end on Saturday with a rousing farewell to thousands of supporters here and an emotional and unequivocal call for her voters to get behind Senator Barack Obama, the man who defeated her for the Democratic nomination.
For 28 minutes, standing alone on a stage in the historic National Building Museum, Mrs. Clinton spoke not only about the importance of electing Mr. Obama, but also about the extent to which her campaign was a milestone for women. She urged women who had supported her ― who had turned out at her headquarters, flocked to her rallies and poured into the polls to vote for her ― not to take the wrong lesson from her loss.

東京で白昼の惨劇
Man Kills 7 on Tokyo Street in Rampage
( New York Times )
A 25-year-old man who told the police he was tired of life went on a killing rampage in a popular shopping street in central Tokyo on Sunday, plowing his truck into a crowd of pedestrians before stabbing passers-by with a survival knife. Seven people died and 11 were injured.
The attack took place shortly after noon on a street that had been closed to vehicles for the day in Akihabara, the main district for electronics in Tokyo and a magnet for fans of Japanese anime and manga comics. The killings stunned a country that has long enjoyed low crime rates but where a series of random stabbings have recently occurred.

Doubts Rise as 100-Meter Record Falls
( New York Times )
When Usain Bolt of Jamaica set a world record of 9.72 seconds at 100 meters Saturday night, two questions became urgent:
Was the supporting tailwind legal?
Was Bolt himself legal?
Track and field has become so compromised by doping that any startling performance brings immediate suspicion. Even before the race at the Reebok Grand Prix meet on Randalls Island, Bolt and his top challenger, the 2007 world champion Tyson Gay, faced inevitable questions from reporters about performance-enhancing drugs. The pre-race inquiries have become as routine as the postrace drug screens.

中国支援、自衛隊機ではなく民間機で
Japan to Send China Aid on Civilian, Not Military, Planes
( New York Times )
Japan on Thursday decided against using military aircraft to deliver aid to earthquake victims in China after Chinese officials reportedly expressed concerns about what would have been the first Japanese military deployment to China since the two countries were enemies during World War II.
Meanwhile, an education official in Sichuan Province conceded that poor official oversight and corruption might have contributed to the collapse of numerous schools during the earthquake on May 12. The official, Lin Qiang, also said he would forgo his own plans to carry the Olympic torch during its relay through the earthquake region.
